Who won the Belmont Stakes in 2023? Full results, finish order & highlights from the race | Sporting News (2024)

Triple Crown season ended with a piece of history at Belmont Park on Saturday.

Arcangelo held off favorite Forte to win the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes, in the process making Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race.

National Treasure came out of the gate rapidly and led for much of the early stages of the 1 1/2-mile race, but Arcangelo stayed close to the Preakness Stakes winner. The two were neck-and-neck until Arcangelo pulled ahead in the stretch.

Forte gave Arcangelo a late challenge as National Treasure faded, but Antonucci's horse maintained the lead and produced a convincing win at 7-1 odds.

In a sport often dominated by the same trainers, Antonucci broke through the glass ceiling. The 47-year-old trainer is from South Florida, but the biggest moment of her career came on Long Island with tens of thousands of fans in attendance.

Arcangelo's win also marked a historic feat for jockey Javier Castellano, who earned a career Triple Crown. Castellano has won the Preakness Stakes twice, and he earned his first Kentucky Derby win as Mage's jockey in May.
